Why should DDF be implemented in DB2?

This question is probably easy to answer - but I need to know the answer.

What functions does DDF bring to DB2 and how does it make DB2 a better product?

What benefits does it provide to allow migration to newer versions of DB2 and does it make integration with products such as Oracle and IMS better?

I'd appreciate any feedback possible.
